Toothache usually refers to pain in tooth and/or its surrounding structures. It occurs when the central part of the tooth, called pulp, becomes inflamed due to several possible reasons – cavities, infection of gums, exposed tooth root, tooth fractures, etc. Suffering from a sharp and throbbing pain is often frustrating. Luckily, there are some remedies on how to stop a toothache.

1. Cleanse your mouth

Sometimes, toothaches are caused by a very tiny piece of food stuck between your teeth. In this case, cleaning your mouth thoroughly may save you from pain and from having to seek more complex home remedies on stopping a toothache. Use a dental floss and brush your teeth. Repeat it two to three times a day until the pain goes away.

2. Rinse with brine

The popular salt-water mixture can also be used as a treatment for toothaches. When the pain is caused only by a mild infection or a blow to the tooth, rinsing with a mixture of warm water and sea salt could ease the pain. Do this several times a day until the pain is gone.

3. Apply a cold compress

Make an ice pack and then apply it on the cheek area near the affected tooth. Doing so eases the pain as the inflammation is reduced.

4. Apply clove oil

Cloves contain anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory characteristics that ease the pain and fight infection. With these properties, it makes it an effective home remedy for toothaches. Just make a clove oil by grinding two cloves and then mixing them with olive oil or a vegetable oil.

If you don’t have the time to make one, buy clove oil in a drug store. Apply it by putting a couple of drops on a cotton ball and then rub it directly on the affected tooth.

5. Use acupuncture

With the use of your fingers, apply pressure on the area where the thumb and index finger of your other hand meet. This part of the hand is a pressure point that is related to pain in different parts of your body. Doing should stop tooth pain quickly.

With the remedies listed above, enduring the pain that a toothache causes will no longer be a problem. They are all proven to be effective in dealing with toothaches.

However, if the pain doesn’t go away, consulting your dentist is the best thing to do. This persistent pain might be caused by more serious complications that that require more aggressive treatment. Most importantly, keep in mind that prevention is still better than a cure.
